Théâtre Romain
Autumn offers a better view of the theatre thanks to the reduction in vegetation!
Enjoy the second largest theatre in the Roman world, with a capacity of 20,000 spectators, in the heart of Burgundy. This jewel of Augustodunum still hosts cultural and sporting events in the autumn. Discover this vestige thanks to audio guides and immerse yourself in ancient times.
Built around 70 AD and located to the east of the ancient city, this theatre was used for theatrical performances, including comedies, tragedies, cabaret-style plays, musicals and political meetings.
At 148 metres in diameter, it is the second largest theatre in the Roman world, seating up to 20,000 spectators. Taking advantage of the natural slope of the land, the theatre adopted a classical style with tiers arranged in three semi-circular rows, intersected by staircases. An imposing wall, thought to be 30 metres high, closed off the theatre behind the stage.
