Musée d'Art et d'Archéologie de Cluny
The Palais Jean de Bourbon, Musée d'Art et d'Archéologie, is a rare example of a flamboyant Gothic Seigneurial dwelling with vast ceremonial rooms adorned with monumental fireplaces. It houses outstanding works of medieval sculpture from Cluny, from the town and the abbey.
Don't miss the 1:1 reconstruction of part of the Great Portal of Cluny III (tympanum, lintel, voussures, jambs), a masterpiece of Romanesque sculpture, and its film.
The old library houses rare printed documents inherited from the Cluniac library.
The new room contains recently restored paintings, some of which have never before been exhibited at Cluny.
From the Palais, you can access the belvedere forecourt of the great abbey church, the remains of its front aisle and its five naves, and the great courtyard of the abbey, between the Saint-Hugues guest house (11th century) and the Palace of Pope Gelasius.
A tactile reader will allow you to flick through some emblematic pages of the books in the museum's former library, the oldest dating back to 1492!
