Forteresse de Berzé
The village of Berzé-le-Châtel will seduce you for its landscapes, its hikes and the greenway.
Would you like to spend a moment out of time, ladies and gentlemen? Visit the fortress of Berzé-le-Châtel with your family, the largest and best preserved in Burgundy. A rich programme of activities and guided tours immerses you in the fascinating world of the daily life of knights in the Middle Ages, and tells you the history of the fortress!
A family property built by the ancestors of the current owners to protect the Abbey of Cluny, Berzé overlooks a superb panorama of the vineyards of the Solutré valley. Built between the 11th and 15th centuries around its Carolingian chapel, the castle retains its entire defensive system, thirteen towers including two keeps, its impressive entrance châtelet and its medieval rooms.
This makes it the largest and best-preserved fortress in Burgundy.
The castle comprises three enclosures. Each is home to a variety of gardens, including orchards, vegetable plots and a formal garden with boxwood, statues, hedges and tall yew trees shaped like chess pieces. From the top of the terraces, there is a splendid view over the Val Lamartinien with its vineyards in the background.
The setting for Ridley Scott's Hollywood film "The Last Duel", starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, Adam Driver and Jodie Cormier.
In season, the tavern offers refreshments and the chance to taste the estate's wines from 10am to 6pm!
